AfterSchool KidzMath™
KidzMath™ is an engaging program designed to provide opportunities for children in grades K-6 to use mathematics in settings outside of the classroom. The games and activities help children learn key math skills while having fun. To meet the unique needs of afterschool programs, the activities are designed for both large and small groups, require few materials, and can be used in structured or unstructured settings.
The AfterSchool KidzMath™ program (grades K–2 and 3–6), created by Developmental Studies Center, is a mathematics enrichment program designed specifically for out-of-school settings, though it is also successful in the classroom. It uses cooperative games and storybook-based activities to promote mathematical understanding and
social development.
Children develop mathematical skills, gain confidence in their mathematical abilities, increase their enjoyment of mathematics, and improve their ability to work with others. The program, which is aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, offers considerable support for after-school staff.
In 2003, researchers from the Developmental Studies Center conducted an evaluation study of the AfterSchool KidzMath™ program. Six after-school sites in the San Francisco Bay Area were involved and four methods of data collection were used in the study. A large-scale comparison evaluation of the program is currently being conducted at 44 sites affiliated with Sacramento START.
