TRAINING FOR AFTERSCHOOL PROFESSIONALS IN 2023
Temescal Associates and the How Kids Learn Foundation provide virtual/online, in person, and hybrid training opportunities for afterschool stakeholders. Our sessions can be customized for different audiences: afterschool leaders, afterschool staff, educators, parents or youth.

- TAILORED: Rather than use canned trainings, trainings should be designed in consultation with program leaders to ensure that sessions meet the goals of the leaders.
- ONLINE: Virtual trainings may be preferred to ensure safety and flexibility as they can be recorded and shared with future staff.
- BASICS: Because of the large turnover of afterschool staff, exacerbated by the COVID pandemic, many staff need to be introduced to the basics, including youth development strategies, behavior management, facilitation skills and the history of afterschool in America.
- ONE-TIME TRAININGS: These are one- off trainings that are useful introductions and raise understanding and awareness. But one-time trainings on individual topics does not ensure integration into practice.
- LEARNING COMMUNITY AND TRAINING SERIES: In order to ensure integration into practice and program improvement, we have found that learning communities are most effective.

1. Mindfulness (Which includes a 16- week curriculum for use with youth)
2. Virtual Vacation: An Academic and Cultural Approach to Afterschool Education (This includes a Leader’s Guide on how to implement Virtual Vacations)
3. Crossing the Boundaries of Power- Tools and skills to transform programs into more inclusive environments where diversity is celebrated and honored.
4. Youth Development- Skills to create environments where young people thrive. (This includes a hard copy of our Youth Development Guide 2.0)
5. We can also develop a training series focusing on a topic that you prefer.
